I think the Tamron is a great lens. As the zoom range suggests it is my standard zoom lens. At 28mm it's already quite wide (the 5D is a full frame camera) and I have a little zoom at 75mm already. So I take the Tamron when I shoot nature scenes that don't want to have a wide-angle-feeling. It would also do a great job for portraits I guess.
