How do you not get the picture over exposed to light?

In this case I took 4 exposures and used 3 of them to get a better dynamic range. They are blended manually by using hand-painted masks in Photoshop.

The internet is a great source ... just look up words like "layers, masks, photoshop, blend, manually" and you might find a lot of tutorials. Or just experiment - it's fun too ;)
